How far the consulate is from your city
Driving distances to the post that covers each city, calculated at posted speed limits and without traffic:
| City | Philippine post | Distance | Journey |
|---|---|---|---|
| Columbia | Washington, D.C. | 484 miles | 9 h 1 min by car |
| Greenville | Washington, D.C. | 496 miles | 9 h 32 min by car |
| North Charleston | Washington, D.C. | 530 miles | 9 h 50 min by car |
| Charleston | Washington, D.C. | 535 miles | 9 h 57 min by car |
From Charleston that is 9 h 57 min by car each way, which makes it worth checking the consular outreach schedule before committing to the drive: missions bring passport and dual citizenship services to cities without a post, and the appointments are free.
Before you plan the journey
Three of the most searched Philippine procedures in the United States are not consular procedures at all, and knowing that is worth more than knowing the opening hours:
- PSA certificates — birth, marriage, death, CENOMAR — come from the Philippine Statistics Authority and are ordered online.
- Apostilles on documents issued in South Carolina come from the state’s own competent authority. Since 15 May 2019 the consulate cannot authenticate them.
- NBI clearance is issued in the Philippines and applied for by mail; only the fingerprint card needs a consular officer.
The procedures that genuinely need you at a window are the ones where a consular officer has to watch you do something: give fingerprints for a passport, swear the oath of allegiance, or sign a power of attorney.
Charleston to Washington is around eight hours by road. Between the Embassy's outreach missions and the procedures that never require a consulate, most South Carolina residents can avoid that trip.
